Built in the 1930's, this former Michigan State Police Post is typical of many built across the state.

The DK Design Group renovated the building and moved their offices into it in July of 2005.

The DK Design Group maintained the existing exterior of the building and enhanced its appearance with a new barrier free entry and extensive landscaping.

The former garage was transformed into a large conference room, and the former interrogation room was opened up with a glass wall and converted to a small conference room.  The bar where suspects were hand cuffed can still be seen.

This design-build project was completed in November 2009.  The DK Design Group was first chosen to complete the initial 30% design of the building, and was later awarded the Design-Build Contract.  The construction phase was completed in seven months.

The interior was designed to incorporate 85% natural daylight.  The lighting package uses occupancy sensors, along with Daylight Harvesting, to take advantage of the natural light.

The exposed structure increases the perception of open space, while adding to the modern / industrial concept.  The sloping glass curtain walls and clerestory windows add modern elements to the more traditional building massing and palette of materials.

This building was designed to reflect a contemporary form springing from a more traditional building base. It uses arched forms and wider expanses of glass in the center mass, the upper clerestory, and the drive-thru canopy. A galvanized steel, exterior skin is also used in these areas to carry that theme.

On the East and West ends, the building has a number of traditional elements such as the punched window openings, the flat-roofs and the use of masonry. These were intended to reflect a more traditional “bank” appearance and to tie the facility to its surroundings and the Mitchell streetscape.

The contempoary galvanized steel, exterior skin is used on the exterior, as well as the interior. The curved roof lines are also carried into the interior space with a radiused teller line. The owner has chosen to carry this theme throughout other buildings around the state.
